Be Active Truro

An annual sports and activities festival in the heart of Truro

City’s first Be Active Truro event attracts hundreds of participants

Hundreds of people tried out new sporting activities at the first Be Active Truro festival.

Taking place on Lemon Quay and at Boscawen Park between Monday and Friday last week, the event attracted nearly 2,000 attendees to the exhibition stands and several hundred had a go at the sports on offer.

Organisers Cornwall Sports Partnership, Truro City Council and Event Cornwall, supported by Totally Truro Business Improvement District, hope to put on a similar festival next year.

Be Active Truro aimed to encourage more young people and adults to take part in at least 30 minutes of activity, five times a week, as well as promote the facilities on offer in the city.

Local traders offering sporting activities and products exhibited on Lemon Quay on Monday and Tuesday, while research collected during the week will help Cornwall Sports Partnership shape some new activities for the city in the Autumn.

Highlights of the week included a corporate sports day, complete with a Truro City Council team led by Mayor Rob Nolan, wheelchair basketball, cheerleading, cricket and a dedicated Wheels day for cycling.

A host of businesses took part in Friday's corporate sports day, competing in the three-legged race, bean-bag toss, egg and spoon race and a dance mat competition. The event was won by Lemon Street-based Worldwide Financial Planning.

Natasha Howard from Cornwall Sports Partnership said: "It's the first time we've worked in partnership with Truro City Council and Event Cornwall before, and we're really happy with how the week went.

"We wanted to find out how active people are already, and what new sports or activities they wanted to try. We surveyed probably 300 people which was fantastic."

Roger Gazzard, town clerk at Truro City Council, added: "The festival was a great success and generated a lot of participation. It's provided opportunities for people to improve their health and fitness, as well as showcase some of the fantastic facilities we have in Truro."

Claire Eason-Bassett, director at Event Cornwall, said: "Together, we've created an event that generated fantastic attendance and great profile for sporting activities around the county. We look forward to developing it next year."
